NLRB Mandates Company Acknowledgment of Teamsters Union

In an unprecedented verdict, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) decreed that Amazon unlawfully rebuffed the recognition of the Staten Island-based Amazon Labor Union-International Brotherhood of Teamsters (ALU-IBT) Local 1, compelling the corporation to initiate negotiations with the Teamsters.

“Four years ago, Amazon personnel at JFK8 triumphed in an NLRB election. Now, as we commemorate this pivotal anniversary, they have become the inaugural group to compel the company to acknowledge their union, achieving this alongside the Teamsters,” remarked Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien.

“This struggle is far from concluded, yet the NLRB’s judgment marks a historic victory for Amazon Teamsters across the nation, epitomizing the strength of collective workforce solidarity.”

Approximately 5,500 warehouse employees at the JFK8 venue in Staten Island organized their union on April 1, 2022. In June 2024, they affiliated with the Teamsters Union, which subsequently formalized the charter for ALU-IBT Local 1.

Throughout the past four years, the NLRB has consistently determined that Amazon has willfully disregarded the union’s validity while exerting pressure on Teamsters at JFK8 to capitulate to their organizing efforts.

“Amazon’s tactic in recent years has been characterized by procrastination — and the NLRB affirmed this, as the law is not in their favor,” commented Randy Korgan, Director of the Teamsters Amazon Division.

“Amazon Teamsters are acutely aware that this corporation will employ every measure to evade its obligations. The Teamsters will persist in enhancing worker power at Amazon and ensuring adherence to the law wherever it is breached.”

Amazon is mandated to display the NLRB’s ruling visibly within the JFK8 facility, notifying employees of their rights to unionize.

Consequently, Amazon has depleted its options for appealing this ruling regarding the unionization of Teamsters at this particular site.

“We are crafting history at Amazon, driven by unmitigated worker power,” stated Connor Spence, President of ALU-IBT Local 1.

“Amazon has deployed every resource to dismantle our efforts over the preceding four years, yet continues to falter because unrelenting avarice cannot overpower collective action.”

This ruling came just a day after the union proclaimed another historic victory that affirmed the right of Amazon Teamsters to strike.
